Cardassian Occupation of Bajor
The Prime Directive
Known
Races
There are many known races to the Federation: Humans, Vulcans, Klingons,
Romulans, Orions, Bajorans, Cardassians, Ferengi, etc, etc.
Of
these, many are Federation members (i.e. Humans, Vulcans...),
while many more are friendly non-Federation members (i.e. Ferengi,
Bajorans...). But there are a few hostile races as well: the Breen,
for example.
There is a wealth of
information on alien races at
the OF Races Info page
These include the Klingons, Bajorans,
Romulans, Breen, Son'a, Ferengi, Cardassians, Gorn, and
Tholians. While it's not necessary to read all this, please keep the
page bookmarked for reference.
Race
Traits
Most races have strengths and weaknesses.
They have
"personalities". Klingons are a proud warrior race.
Romulans
are stealthy, sly, given to covert ops. The Ferengi are merchants,
stopping at nothing to gain a profit. When RPGing, try to make the races
act like they're supposed to. Some exceptions are OK, as there are unique
individuals, but most aliens will act accordingly. Most of the races are
from the TV series, or movies or from the Star Trek books.
Cardassian
Occupation of Bajor
The Cardassians first contacted the Bajorans offering to help.
This
"help" soon became a violent occupation. The Cardassians were
given to torturing and raping Bajoran civilians. Bajor's natural
resources were taken by the Cardassians, wreaking havoc on Bajor's
environment and economy. The Cardassians continued this occupation for a
number of years, led by the infamous Gul Dukat. During this time,
Bajoran terrorists, known as "freedom fighters", emerged to rid Bajor of
the Cardassians and end the Occupation. They were referred to as
the Resistance. After the Cardassians pulled out, the Federation
moved in to help Bajor. The abandoned Cardassian space station
Deep Space Nine was run under joint administration, by Commander Benjamin Sisko (Starfleet)
and Major Kira Nerys(Bajoran military).
The
Prime Directive
Here's a nice touchy subject...
Brief recap: Starfleet General Order
1: It is the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its
normal cultural evolution. This is considered sacred and so no Starfleet
personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien
life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior
knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable
of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate
this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless
they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental
contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any
and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral
obligation.
The Prime Directive
means we aren't allowed to interfere with the normal cultural evolution
of a race. If they're in the middle of a civil war, we can't go in and
stop it. If they're starving because of a sudden climate change, but
haven't made contact with alien life, we can't help them. In short, we
can't do anything to a culture that has not made contact with alien life
due to their own actions. We also can't interfere in any internal affairs of a culture,
unless asked. And maybe not even then.
The only exception
is to correct an earlier violation of this rule.
